New Technologies In The World Of Work

"Google before you tweet" is the new "think before you speak"  - Paulo Coelho

Technology is continually progressing, and it is now possible to stay connected everywhere and at all time. The social media generation thinks about work in a very different way than any other generation before. A Microsoft survey says that people havegained “a new sense of ‘presence’ as an integral part of the New World of Work concept”.
We are no longer required to be in the same room or office to attend a meeting. Video conferencing and webcams have taken the role very effectively replacing the conferencing hall. YouTube, Google and Facebook have changed the way many companies think about marketing and PR.
The essential point is, new technologies are embraced by a younger generation that is growing larger in size and influence. The leadership role is to make the work space a fertile ground for innovation because it is the only way to stay ahead of the competition. Leaders who can empower employees and make the most out of new technology are the ones who grow their companies with the least effort. A growing number of your employees, customers and competitors are using these new technologies and it is crucial that you lead by example.

How can your organisation really benefit from the use of new technologies in the workspace?

The concept of doing business in which employees sit in expensive office spaces limit hiring to local staff and cost a lot to companies. In his TED talk, Jason Fried explains why "work doesn't happen at work", and social media allows employers to both reduce office cost and increase productivity... because work doesn't happen at work.

Companies must not measure employees performances based on inputs like the number of hours they show up at the office, but by measuring the result and impact of their work on new products & services, sales and customer satisfaction. It is also worth mentioning that by sourcing employees globally, organisations can benefit from a 24/7 operation at the fraction of the cost of your competition.
Using new technology to enhance work is about bringing together the best of the traditional work environment and the new digital lifestyle. A research report by MIT Leadership Center states “to be successful in the world going forward, we will need a new set of mental models. We need to shift our thinking from “command-and control” to “coordinate-and cultivate.”

Samuel Craig claims that regardless of a company size, organisations “have to craft strategies in the broader context of world markets to anticipate, respond and adapt to the changing configuration of these markets.” It is therefore, very important for the 21st Century’s organisations to constantly redefine, restructure itself to confront this all encompassing force that pervades every aspect of business.

What do you do to make the most out of new technologies to increase your employees performances?
